Vision and values

GPDN aims to educate and inspire Canadian graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to develop and take action to achieve current and future career goals.

It is clear that graduate and postdoctoral training has evolved significantly in the past decades with changed expectations from students, government, and industry sectors. To help graduate students and postdoctoral scholars succeed in this new environment, career development professionals and administrators must develop and deliver new programming and resources based on these updated practices and expectations.

To support these career development efforts, GPDN strives to create a supportive network where career development professionals and administrators can share resources with other professionals, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars; establish collaborations; and advance graduate and postdoctoral training, research, and development.

GDPN's key focus

Advocacy & Communications:

Provide expertise and be a national voice on current and future topics related to graduate student and postdoc development. The focus of this priority is to provide information to outside organizations and the public, as well as managing communications with members.

  • Advocate for the needs of our clients (graduate students and postdocs) and members.
  • Communicate with the public about issues and innovations related to providing support for graduate students and postdocs.
  • Communicate with members about activities, news, and events related to providing support for graduate students and postdocs.

Research & Collaborative Partnerships:

Collaborate with each other and external partners to enhance support for graduate students and postdocs. The focus for this priority is to contribute to evidence-based practice in the field of graduate student and postdoc development.

  • Initiate and collaborate on special projects (e.g. research projects, funding proposals, advocacy-related activities) that would benefit students at all member institutions.
  • Research, publish, and report on issues and best practices related to graduate student and postdoc development.
  • Publish results of the Annual Benchmarking Survey of member institutions.
